An unidentified gunman on Saturday held up the Inverness Food Mart, 2612 Highway 44 West, making off with cigarettes and an undetermined amount of cash.

No one was injured in the robbery at the store, which is in the Shell station located at the intersection of Independence Highway and Highway 44 West. Citrus County Sheriff’s Office dispatchers received the call just before 8:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The clerk told responding deputies that when he walked back inside the store, he saw what appeared to be a white male wearing a sky-blue zippered jacket with the hood up, obscuring the man’s face. He said the jacket had a white horizontal stripe.

The suspect, approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighing 175 pounds, was also wearing dark jeans, black tennis shoes, black gloves and had a black backpack over his shoulder.

The robber was holding a handgun, and actually had on a full black face mask when he demanded all the money from the register. He then ordered the clerk to the floor behind the counter.

The suspect exited the rear door, running to his right and hopping a fence. At that point, he may have gotten into a vehicle.

Crime scene technicians responded to process for evidence. The store’s surveillance video was reviewed, and several photos of the hooded suspect were released.

Detectives are continuing to develop suspects and follow up on leads. They’re also looking at all possible connections and common threads between any of the three latest armed robberies reported in the county.
